The radiolarians of this plate are microscopic, single-celled organisms that build impossibly intricate skeletons from silica — rings, lattices and arched frameworks that look like the work of a master architect. Ernst Haeckel, who discovered and named thousands of radiolarian species, drew them in luminous detail against a dark ground, every strut and sphere perfectly placed.

The image is one of the 100 lithographs in Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), and radiolarians were arguably Haeckel's greatest artistic obsession. Their symmetrical, crystalline structures had a direct and documented influence on Art Nouveau — most famously on architect René Binet, who modelled the monumental gateway of the 1900 Paris World's Fair on Haeckel's radiolarian drawings.
