The coronate jellyfish of this plate come from the deeper, darker reaches of the ocean, and Haeckel drew them with a fittingly dramatic touch. Their crowned, grooved bells sit above short, sturdy tentacles, arranged in warm browns, reds and ambers against a shadowy background so that they seem to hang suspended in the deep. There is a richness and weight to these medusae that sets them apart from his paler jellyfish studies.
The illustration is part of Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), Ernst Haeckel's portfolio of 100 lithographs. As the marine biologist who classified and named countless jellyfish, Haeckel returned to the medusa again and again, and each plate reveals a different facet of their form — proof of why his flowing, symmetrical designs became so central to Art Nouveau.
This print is warm, moody and atmospheric. The amber-and-brown palette makes it a cosy yet sophisticated choice for a living room, study or bedroom, especially against deep or richly coloured walls, and it adds welcome warmth to a Haeckel gallery wall otherwise dominated by cooler blues. Layered with his other jellyfish plates, it deepens the whole arrangement.
Reproduced on museum-quality matte paper with archival colour and a non-reflective finish, available in 30×40, 50×70 and 70×100 cm, framed or unframed. Rich, atmospheric vintage jellyfish art in a warmer key.
