Glass sponges are nature's master glassblowers, building intricate skeletons from pure silica — and this Haeckel plate shows them as the architectural wonders they are. Lattice-like tubes and baskets rise across the sheet in pale ivory and gold, their delicate mesh walls drawn with a precision that makes them look almost engineered, like miniature cathedrals from the deep sea.

The illustration belongs to Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), Ernst Haeckel's series of 100 lithographs published between 1899 and 1904. Haeckel — zoologist, marine biologist and artist — was endlessly drawn to the hidden geometry of simple organisms, and his sponge studies are a perfect example of why his work is said to have inspired the structural ornament of Art Nouveau and even early modern architecture.

This print has a refined, neutral palette that makes it exceptionally easy to live with. The soft ivory tones suit almost any colour scheme, lending a calm, intellectual elegance to a study, bedroom or living room, and the structural subject appeals to anyone who appreciates architecture and design as much as natural history. It sits beautifully alongside Haeckel's radiolarian and hydroid plates.

Printed on museum-quality matte paper with archival inks and a gentle, glare-free finish, in 30×40, 50×70 and 70×100 cm, with or without a frame. Quietly sophisticated vintage marine art with an architectural soul.
